“I don’t believe the English Bible should correct the Spanish Bible”

The previous statement was made by the most outspoken of our critics; he makes such a statement while holding in his hand a Spanish Bible that was “corrected” by ENGLISH BIBLES.

I write this response only because the same statement is being repeated by many others. God’s people deserve to know the truth. Please allow me to demonstrate that the great majority of the changes that were made in the 1960 RV Spanish Bible were taken from ENGLISH BIBLES(The ASV & RSV).

MY OPINION ABOUT OUR CRITICS

Many have asked me, why don’t you respond to your critics?

1. Our critics have a right to express their opinions.

“The clash of ideas is the sound of liberty” I may be 100% in disagreement with all they say or write; yet I would give my life to defend the right they have to express their ideas and their opposition to our work. Even if they exceed the lines of decorum, it is far better to let them speak up, than to try to silence them. I am a firm believer in the freedom of speech.

Muchas veces me han preguntado, ¿por qué no responde a sus críticos?

“El choque de las ideas, es el sonido de la libertad”

1. Nuestros críticos tienen el derecho de externar lo que piensan.

Puede ser que yo esté en desacuerdo con el 100% de lo que dicen, o escriben; sin embargo daría mi vida por defender el derecho que ellos tienen a expresar sus ideas y manifestar su oposición a nuestro trabajo, aun cuando excedan los límites de la ética; preferible dejar que hablen de más, que tratar de callarles la boca. Soy un firme creyente de la libertad de expresión.

Dear Dr. Roland,

Greetings in the name of our Lord.

Due to what your general secretary, Mr. Greendyk, has recently written about us and our Bible, there are some people spreading around (parroting) not the positive but the negative of what he wrote. (Perhaps this was his intention.) Unfortunately, I feel obligated to write this letter to you. Through this open letter I would like to communicate to you my disappointment with the Trinitarian Bible Society (TBS).

THE PROBLEM

I believe that by now most of you are interested and concerned about this issue. All our Bibles in Spanish have textual problems, some more than others. Unfortunately most of our Spanish preacher friends are in denial concerning the several mistakes that we have in our Spanish Bibles. One of the reasons why they are in denial is because they feel that they have been insulted and attacked, and in some instances they are right.

Creo que para ahora la mayoría de ustedes están enterados de la controversia acerca de nuestra Biblia en español. Y sé que muchos están interesados acerca de este asunto.

EL PROBLEMA

Todas nuestras Biblias en español tienen problemas textuales; unas más que otras. Desafortunadamente, la mayoría de los predicadores de habla hispana se niegan a admitirlo. Una de las razones por la cual se niegan a admitirlo es por el hecho de que se sienten insultados y atacados; en muchos casos tienen razón. Dolorosamente ha habido ataques de un lado e igual respuesta del otro. Para poder reconciliarnos (lo cual debemos hacer, y espero que lo hagamos) se va a tomar departe de nosotros, predicadores bautistas independientes, tiempo, disposición y algo de lo que la mayoría carecemos, "humildad". Tenemos que humillarnos por la causa de Cristo, por el bien de nuestro pueblo y por la salvación de este mundo perdido. Pero también sentimos que se tomará algo más que eso para solucionar el problema. Tenemos que producir una mejor, y más sólida traducción, o revisión, de nuestra Biblia en español. Una que responda al reto y que pueda ser mejor que todas las revisiones que hasta ahora tenemos. Una Biblia pura al texto y perfecta en nuestro lenguaje. Una que nos haga ponernos de pie y con orgullo decir, sin ofrecer disculpas: "Esta es la palabra de Dios en español." Una fiel traducción al español de la inspirada, inerrante, infalible, preservada y perfecta Palabra de Dios de sus idiomas originales, Hebreo, Arameo y Griego. Una revisión que nos una. Por la gracia de Dios creemos que ésta es la que Dios nos ha concedido.
